World Cup Pedigree
The US have only once failed to qualify for a World Cup (1995) but in five tournaments they have done little to convince that they deserve to be on the big stage, having won just one of 17 games.
Road to the World Cup
The US missed their first chance of qualifying for New Zealand after losing to old rivals Canada in a home and away play-off in July 2009. But a few months later they sealed their spot at the World Cup with a 54-28 aggregate win over Uruguay in the America 2 qualifier.
Recent Form
The US ended a disappointing Churchill Cup in June with a much needed 32-25 win over Russia to finish the six-team tournament in fifth place In their two group matches they were blown away by eventual champions, the English Saxons 87-6, before being overwhelmed by Tonga 44-13.
Star Player - Todd Clever: The first ever USA Eagle to play in Super Rugby, for the Lions in 2009 and 2010, is a hardworking flanker who represented North Harbour in New Zealand's NPC in 2006. Recently Clever, now the captain of the Eagles, was made the face of US rugby and is currently spreading the word to a novice rugby country while playing for Japanese club Suntory.
A Kiwi Connection
Highlanders winger James Paterson, who had an outstanding season for the rejuvenated franchise, was named in the Eagles World Cup squad. Paterson's call up comes six years after representing the USA Under 19 team at the 2005 Under 19 World Cup in South Africa.
Something you probably didn't know
USA are the winners of the only two gold medals of rugby union ever offered at the Olympics Games. They upset France, the only other nation competing, 8-0 in the 1920 final in Belgium before shocking Les Bleus again four years later. The US won the final 17-3 in Paris despite being 20-1 underdogs.
Chances of winning World Cup
In a nation where the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL are the centre of the sporting universe, it's no surprise to see the USA rugby team struggle on the world stage. Many of their top players are athletes who simply weren't good enough to make it in the NFL and have come into the sport lacking both the education and the technical application. But having said that, expect the US to pick up their second ever World Cup win, over Russia on September 15, four days after they play one of the more fascinating minnow matches at the tournament against Ireland, on September 11.

World Cup Pedigree
None - this is Russia's first World Cup.
Road to the World Cup
The Russian Rugby Union was only established in 1992 but after 18 short years had qualified for their first World Cup with a historic 21-21 draw with Romania in Sochi on 27 February 2010. The draw meant Russia were guaranteed a top two finish in the European Nations Cup and one of the region's two qualification places at RWC 2011 .
Recent Form
Russia's euphoria AT qualifying for the World Cup was short-lived as they went through their 2011 Churchill Cup campaign in June losing all three matches to Canada, Italy A and the fifth place playoff to the USA 32-25. Russia will play four warm-up matches in August against British club sides Northampton, Newport, Ospreys and Gloucester.
Star Player - Vasili Artemiev: The star Russian winger, who can also play fullback, caught the eye with three tries in Russia's 2010 Churchill Cup campaign. With genuine pace, he has now scored eight tries for Russia in 21 Tests. So impressive has been his form that English club Northampton recently signed him.
A Kiwi Connection
Russia's coach, former Wales captain Kingsley Jones, is the son of Phil Kingsley Jones who is famous in New Zealand for being the manager of a certain Jonah Lomu. Another familiar name, former New Zealand rugby league international Henry Paul, is Kingsley Jones' assistant.
Something you probably didn't know
2003 World Cup winner, former English winger Jason Robinson, has been helping coach Russia ahead of the World Cup because of his close relationship with Kingsley Jones, who used to be his coach at English club Sale.
Chances of winning World Cup
Russia have very much already won their World Cup in getting to New Zealand in the first place but the icing on the cake would undoubtedly be a win over the Pool's C other minnows, the USA. They meet in Russia's first ever World Cup match in New Plymouth on September 15.
Russia's World Cup Squad
Denis Anotonov, Vladimir Botvinnikov, Adam Byrnes, Artem Fatakhov, Andrey Garbuzov, Viatcheslav Grachev, Victor Gresev, Alexander Kkrokin, Vladislav Korshunov, Evgenii Matveev, Andrey Ostrikov, Sergey Popov, Ivan Prischchepenko, Mikhail Sidorov, Alexey Travkin, Valeriy Tsnobiladze, Alexander Voytov, Vasily Artemyev, Mikhail Babaev, Andrey Bykanov, Igor Galinovskiy, Igor Klyuchnikov, Yury Kushnarev, Andrey Kuzin, Alexey Makovetskiy, Vladimir Ostroushko, Konstantin Rachkov, Alexander Shakirov, Denis Simplikevich, Alexander Yanyushkin
